Re: Arnold to go rental-only
I've been playing with Redshift and doing the basic tutorials using the demo for Maya and man ... I finally starting to like the rendering part of 3D.
Redshift is fast and actually fun.
At the same time I saw that Maxon is opening an Open Beta for Bodypaint without improving the UV capabilities. It's hard finding a good substitute for Maya/Max.

Installing the latest Redshift demo as we speak....owei wrote:...well, at least, perpetuals will end April 30th 2018 ;) 300% price increase. not bad, AD, you guys rock! Will give a bit of a boost to Redshift, I guess..
It seems we cannot rely on SolidAngle to maintain their old licensing schemes.
AD can do whatever it wants, and going from 200 euros to 600 a year is too much for me. And also having no access to previous versions is a no-no to me.
We all have to revisit old projects once in a while, and these are often way older than 3 versions back.
Thanks AD, for ruining another piece of great software for a lot of freelancers....

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
Maxon has always been the lamest company when it comes to UV editing. Current UV edit menu was just someone else's plugin implemented right inside Bodypaint. They somehow don't like the idea of a proper UV editor.MauricioPC wrote:At the same time I saw that Maxon is opening an Open Beta for Bodypaint without improving the UV capabilities. So what is changed in this Bodypaint?MauricioPC wrote:I've been playing with Redshift and doing the basic tutorials using the demo for Maya and man ... I finally starting to like the rendering part of 3D.

I prefer to work on C4D than in Max by a long way.

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
Not much apparently. That is what I read from the guys testing it on C4DCafe.
I actually like MAX 2018. The UI is fast, the viewport is better.

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
200/year - maintenance vs 600/year rental. So more expensive and you don't own.
Re: Arnold to go rental-only
Well. I should write "300% price increase for maintaining new licenses after Apr 30th 2018"...luceric wrote:where is the 300% increase?owei wrote:...well, at least, perpetuals will end April 30th 2018 ;) 300% price inccrease. not bad, AD, you guys rock! Arnold has never been inexpensive though. This is the software that didn't publish their prices and you use to have to buy a minimum of 5 licenses at something like 1300$ each 3 years ago (plus I think 300$ a year after) before they talked to you.
The new yearly rental price looks similar to Vray's 530$ a year. The monthly of Vray is 200$ instead of 65$, though.
I guess in the future you have just the license you need preparing the scene and then you pay per minute for cloud rendering.
Re: Arnold to go rental-only
...of course Arnold never was cheap, the problem with the AD rental thing is, "rental only". Rental is absolut OK as long as you have perpetual lics along. But as AD goes for rental ONLY, this was a logical step. Now you will loose the right to OPEN (Maya/Max rental) and RENDER (Arnold soon rental for new lics) you very own work, if you don´t pay for it. ;)

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
Are those dollar figures accurate?
Vray is £320 rental per year or £50 per month in the UK. But a perm lic is £650, or perm lic with 10 rendernodes for £1750.
11 arnold subs for just one year would be £6050!

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
I know, I've been through the whole beta in Softimage at the time, and am one of their first customers. But that doesn't make it any better, does it?luceric wrote: Arnold has never been inexpensive though. What i -do- know, is that my bill for Arnold jumps from 200 to 600 euro's next year. And that is unacceptable, no matter how you spin it.
Some of the peeps at AD must still have a poster of Gordon Gekko on the wall......

Re: Arnold to go rental-only
HEy Rob, as far as I understand, the rental only is "just" for new lics beginning from next April. So, your licenses will (currently) not be affected by this new "feature" ;)
