lol :D

Back from derailment, onto SideFX news... their new 3d asset store (http://www.orbolt.com) could turn out as a flop, but I think its a pretty smart move. If AD "got it" about ICE Compounds they could have been making some profit out of many peoples work (like all the delicious little compounds we find at http://rray.de), as SideFX is about to:
http://www.orbolt.com/search/?q=tags:tool
http://www.orbolt.com/search/?q=tags:effect

I'm not saying there is a lot of money to be made. But it is also a snow ball thing... as users have more tools available, and developers see some benefit ($) of the hours spent on those tools. Community grows, everybody happy!

Why do I get the feeling that SideFX's move has something to do with the future next-gen that is Maya with ICE?
I mean if Maya gets ICE and would be half the price of Houdini former price tag, a lot of rain could fall on SideFX's parade, hence this move.

Modelling in Houdini is slow and very poor experience, some for rigging and animate. Mantra seems have a lot of power but manage it appear very difficult to me.

For me taste and for my need, it is not the alternative to softimage.

If Sidefx could write something that converts Ice compounds into Houdini's, it would be a day of glory for them:) just joking but I am really thinking if this is possible or not:) BTW Mantra is so slow as hell even users of Houdini accept that fact.

No, VEX is a piece of sh#t comparing to ICE. It was designed for shaders, not for particles or scene data manipulations

One simple reason why it would not work: VEX has no contexts, there is only arrays. Where we can avoid for loops, in Houdini it is the only way to work with stuff

For example: ray tracer in Houdini with use of for loop. Paul's version has no repeat nodes so it's multithreaded by ICE
Or mine k-means algorithm versus this one: millions particles in a few seconds versus thousands in whatever time that was.

Well it really depends on your needs. Looking from shader pov you can say that ICE is sh*t compared to VEX. Entire Houdini is ICE like, there is also a lot of stuff I would like to have in ICE, for example Python SOP is one. Also there are a lot stuff from ICE that would be great to have in Houdini.
