This is great news! Vray is a solid renderer and it´s nice to finally have a affordable alternative to MR! I did some jobs with it and it worked quite well! Congrats to chaosgroup to this release..!!

cheers,

I've merged the two topics about this release into one and moved it back to News, where the original topic lived...

watching those videos makes me think thats unbelievable how far behind MR is nowadays, especially the vray mesh instancer is just incredible.. Hair too. render channels with 2 clicks is just wow. And finally we have multichannel exr..
The speed is insane. This is a great addition to Softimage, finally..cant wait to test it out.

Why is this the version 1.5 and not 2.0? Does this version have all the features the version for 3dsmax has?

The VRay core is actually version 2. Its just that not all features are implemented yet like VRay RT

This is good news indeed.
I'm sure about the speed though. The scenes were quite simple and the machine in the videos has a lot of cores.

...as far as I can tell, speed is much better than MR. Effects like DOF or MB render really fast compared to MR. But the most time safing thing to me is, that you can setup a scene much faster than in MR. The indirect lighting stuff works quite reliable AND predictable. You also got the choice between several GI methods. You will get nicer results in a shorter amount of time...compared to MR.

I know about setting up a rendering a lot faster than you could in MR and this is indeed a thing that you can't take lightly, but strictly on the rendering speed I'm not sure v-ray is faster. I mean I don't say it isn't but I'm just not convinced or at least not yet. I'm sure that tests and benchmarks will appear soon so I'll have to suspend my judgement until then.

I tested V-ray when the beta just started and was already impressed with ease and speed.
Looking at the videos, it has become a welcome replacement for Mental Ray.

And to all the "Arnold the urban myth" quotes...
Arnold is out there, and being used a lot. The fact that you cannot buy a single license as a freelancer or one-man band doesn't say it's vaporware.
If you're a studio, and are interested, an email is all it takes.

and now back to discussing V-ray :ymhug:

$1300 bucks is way out of my price range as a hobbyist.

But, I'm glad Vray is available for SI.
