Going Modo?
Going Modo?
Hi,
found this post by Brad Peebler about Softimage EOL quite... interesting and encouraging! He seems to be a man of integrity.

Re: Going Modo?
Folks can say whatever they like about the products Brad has promoted, but those of us who have known him for any real length of time can all vouch for his integrity and genuine passion for the artist. I hear stories about him from as recently as this week, to way back 20 years ago.... and they all sound very similar. I'm encouraged that a guy like him is in the position he's in.
Re: Going Modo?
15 Day free trial.... 30 Day trial for $25...
If you're interested in giving a serious trial to Modo, you could purchase Modo Steam ($150). Seems like a crippled version, ala free XSI Mod Tool (RIP )
http://store.steampowered.com/app/244290/
I think they only use the renderer for texture baking... Not sure what the poly export limit is. I think you can work unlimited while working in modo|steam..
"Often used as the primary 3D content creation tool by professional game development teams like Valve. MODO is a favorite tool for game developers creating everything from DOTA 2 weapons to best-selling titles for desktop PC’s and consoles. Level designers, technical artists, environment artists, modders, hobbyists, and multimedia developers are creating 3D models, environments, and texture maps of all kinds for games and other real-time titles using MODO. Packed with many of the same powerful features as the award-winning modeling suite it’s based-on, MODO Steam Edition offers a more affordable, streamlined workflow for DOTA 2 item creation.
MODO Steam Edition Includes Features For:
◾Highly technical 3D modeling that’s undeniably fun
◾Dynamic sculpting tools for expert tinkering
◾UV Editing tools makes texturing objects in 3D a breeze
◾Texture baking lets you package everything quickly for export
◾Materials setup and painting gives you great artistic flexibility
◾Easy export to DOTA 2 and FBX output to other Source Engine games
◾Save and load from Steam Cloud "

Re: Going Modo?
I am not sure why someone would consider modo as a place to go after using XSI.
Re: Going Modo?
I think Modo would be not a bad option if you really don't want to use AD products and you don't want to do anything that requires animation complexity.
I think any xsi user is going to struggle whatever package they go to, because we have had it so good.
Hopefully Modo will benefit from an influx of softimage users demanding change. The problem modo has always had is the chicken/egg thing, where nobody uses it for animation because it's not that good for it, so no userbase pushing for change there.
There are still Modo users who think it should just concentrate on modelling.
To me, I would LOVE modo to become the best option. I can't see it happening for me as it would need something like ICE and I doubt that is in the current plans.
I was pretty excited about Lightwave core a few years back until I realised that they seemed to have no clue how to make it. Lightwave now has taken the slow but steady route of just building tools on its clunky workflow, so that wouldn't be much of an option for xsi users.

Re: Going Modo?
For one the modeler is very far ahead of LW's modeler. Unfortunately thats what what people start with first so a lot of people never get to the goodness of working with layout or the excellent renderer.kat wrote:I am not sure why someone would consider modo as a place to go after using XSI.
LW modeler is a lot like blender before the UI changes started kicking in, Theres a very big hill to climb to get past the modelling part. Especially if your coming from XSI.

Re: Going Modo?
Have you guys seen LWCAD?
Re: Going Modo?
LWCAD is good, it fills a hole that has been missing in the Lightwave modeler. A lot of options with LWCAD, doors, windows, railings, fences and additional modeling tools.kat wrote:Have you guys seen LWCAD?
XSI tools felt natural and right now for me it's very hard to replace.
I use Softimage for game development. Is there really anything else?

Re: Going Modo?
For you guys that are thinking of Modo ... I found out about this animation at vimeo, but apparently it's on Lux forums as well.
Given it was made by only on guy, I think it's quite impressive. Take a look.

Re: Going Modo?
I don't know about body controls, but to my understanding facial controls at Pixar and some other places are slider-based like that.
