Hi theere!

I have found this framework:

https://github.com/IlgarLunin/PyFlow

its amazing, its pure python and works prety well!

The autor is clearly a Unreal Engine User so its code looks like the blueprints, but I have forked it and changed a bit the nodes so they look more like ice, and added a lot of missing functionality like dynamic changing port types, interface enacements, middle clikc selects wired nodes, copy paste, collapsible group comments, etc

I will upload my fork in not to much and maybe it can helps you to build your new ICE if you intend to do that!

Good luck

Thank you pedrito ! I keep eyes on this pyflow :)

Similar to animation nodes for https://github.com/JacquesLucke/animation_nodes

Ok i work hard and i would say Blender needs more experience in code C to achieve to look like Softimage XSI, if so it is doing it will break of working for Cycles cause it is an addon, a lot need to change internal of code for UI, i think it is wasted of time... Probably i will keep Blackdot and mixing Moonlight Creator and Softimage XSI so i can add in step by step to features and it is more easy to keep for the work... I think Blackdot can make only to softimage already and the dev is C++ i am more comfortable. Blender 2.80 maybe i will work in but not to make softimage because UI is little radical... From now i am focus to Blackdot first and i work in my free time (because no fund in patreon) so it will be slow and many error here and there cause this was unfinished. So wait and see what i can make this open software :)

Sorry about that, my resource is very limited but surely it advance so need more time so yeah it has alot task to be done.
Ah that's a shame. You have a LOOOT of work to do to get all features for a valid 3D authoring app, and... future proofing it might also be hard - and to get future tech into it also would be hard... then maintaining it also will be hard. Making a 3D modeler is something not too difficult, but animation and rigging and particles and a modern viewport that works in realtime then a very optimized renderer and render workflow.. I feel you want to work on a UI. But a featureset is..... huge.

I do think Softimage is a great UI, it had philosophies that apply well to any software - but I personally think it's a feature set could be improved and if it's architecture applied today will grow old quickly.

Maybe outlining exactly what you want to do with your UI proposal point per point, task by task might be easier to fund - and also figuring it out onto a software that already has the feature set WILL save you time, no matter the code source. Creating a strong 3d feature set + UI will take you.... years and years even fully funded.

Designing a software like Modo took years, trueSpace, Blender, Maya, Max, Cinema 4D, Presto.. all took years and years of many minds and people's work to get into their feature set today.

Embarking on the features of a 3D software THEN the UI.. dunno man. I'm not sure the goal to clone XSI is a valid one, maybe building and optimizing and making what is available better might be more worth your time and experience.

What's your first task gonna be?

Draise i know but in Blender to softimage is a way too long to make alot of task, i fear a little for functionality it will broke probably in some area. I think Blackdot is more easy to make but don't worry i will inspire from Blender thanks his source code i can make alot of feature for truely 3D App. By the way all 3D open source are very hard so it needs to start something and little by little it can make very powerful you will like it alot too :)

Perphaps it will not 100% softimage look like but mostly enough you feel as if you were in softimage, the problem is time and alot of work to do list all stuff to make it and it needs some proofs on what it use for 3D software. Some fund it will be greatly appreciated so hope it will get me full time to work.

Designing a software it will not take all years if you know what do you are doing ? Sure it take time but with experience it will complete some task and those who are passionate are taking big steps, so yeah it is more like this :)

my task is learn all C++ as OOP, template and make porwerful as 3D system and then fixing all bad not working to make a release candidate one day but not much changing as though. Later improve UI and make nearly as Softimage and Moonlight Creator... More later adding some killer feature as animation with IK/FK, fluid simulation, hair rendering, fx simulation etc... Thus i work gradually to simple at more complex task.

I don't know maybe Blender to softimage is good i try it but it is not high priority, so i will compare what is best to suit me voilà.

to make the project more interesting to more people, I'd dump whatever scene graph you have in moonlight and just start from scratch on top of Pixar USD and OSD (http://graphics.pixar.com/usd/docs/index.html)

Good link and thank you for your proposal of USD and OSD :) If this is possible i will make it too.

And what about from MaterialX : http://www.materialx.org/

I would like to implement later when it is ready my dev : http://www.smallvcm.com/ or i need to read for PBRT to inspire and put in in my dev?

anyone ever looked at OpenSceneGraph to build something? It says it has an operator graph and everything...

In my personal opinion, modify the BLENDER UI in some cases is absolutely less heavvy than write all from scratch. Blender can be edited from the source code, limitations depend only from the time and complexity that are rewquired on specific topic.
But in the end, the XSI stuf that make it great (a part from animation that is the TOP) are basically some way to operate very fast and intuitive and a CLEAN view of what you do (expecially the component of any objec in the explorer) . A schematic is also missing in blender....
Nothing impossible....
The UI can really replicated and if is necessary a crowfounding base to pay some people, why not? We can organize....
What you think? I will pay happy for this.

What you think?
It depends from people on what they want it needs for pro and cons, a vote and then i will make for you...

It's not necessary to rewrite the whole thing, but streamline and improve on current stuff.
2.8 is going the right direction, but still has some really annoying things to solve, before it's a replacement for Soft as we would like it to be.

If one is really motivated to do the above, get yourself an Blender account and start adding proposals to http://rightclickselect.com/ or https://developer.blender.org/.
After that, get everybody in line and start promoting proposals up the list, so the devs will notice.
I already posted a proposal for improving the collections and the way it should work with filtering via wildcards.

Go ahead and add yours!

And if you're willing to give some money away for the development of Blender, just make a donation or become a member of the Blender Cloud.
Or help out your Blender dev of choice with his/her plugin/addon/tool :)

Just my € 0.02 for today ;)

rob

edit:
Maybe we should make a list of things we, as Softimage users, would like to see improved on, or added.
To see if there's an overlap in functionality we would like to see in 2.8+
That way we can look at proposals or start creating tools to help making the transition?

I think part of the flexibilty of Softimage comes from multi inheritance used in the object model. A polygon mesh is also a pointcloud, and a curve is a pointcloud, that means when a deformer is able to deform a point cloud, it can deform a curve and a polygon mesh, too.

And what comes free with that is when you select both a curve and a polygon mesh, you can edit the all the common attributes of the base types in one editor.

Does blender have this in its object model? I couldn't find out.

we would never have Chrome, and the Iphone would have had a terrible web browser if everyone told the guy who made Khtml to just make a better toolbar for Mozilla instead
