Hello everyone,
I recently launched my new training series titled "Shader Building in Houdini"
This training is a continuation of the Texture Building Series.
In this series we take a look at how to convert simple and complex shader trees into usable Digital Assets. The purpose of the training is to help simplify the material building process in Houdini. We will take the PBR shader nodes and convert those into usable Digital Assets that we can then use in production. We also make digital assets to help make the day to day workflow of shader building simpler.

Re: Shader Building in Houdini
There is need of 3 hours to learn how to handle materials in Houdini?

Re: Shader Building in Houdini
hi Bullit,
The answer to your question is slightly complicated.
Firstly, this is not a beginner level training. Think of training as more of learning how to build complex ICE node structures and converting them into ICE compounds. Houdini's material system is extremely vast and sometimes you build these complex trees to give yourself custom functionality. At those times you might want to convert them into a single Compound node or what in Houdini is called as a Digital Asset. That is primarily what this training covers.
Also there are micro shader nodes which you can use to build your own custom materials, if you want. The training also goes through that process.
Now if you are a beginner none of that is necessary. Houdini ships with a perfectly functional material called the "surface model" which is similar to the vray material or the mental ray Architectural shader which has all the things that you need including SSS. I have done previous trainings where I have built all the materials required using this particular material.
If you look at the "Tea and Cookies" training that I have made, then all the materials in that were done using the Surface Model without going into any kind of extreme complexities. I am putting a link below for the promo so you can get an idea of how far the basic material can be pushed.
As I said in the beginning, this is not a training for beginners. It is aimed more at an intermediate to an advanced level user who wishes to get a deeper understanding of the Houdini "render tree".
I hope that answers your question.

Thanks Rohan
Re: Shader Building in Houdini
Hi Rohan,
Thanks for this.
It's good to see these well planned and informative video training tutorials available, from the basic starter videos to the more advanced ones. And or a price that is very fair.
Like with Softimage, shaderbuilding can go from very simple with some nodes to complex networks.
Your videos definitely are a great addition to usage and workflow in Houdini. There's a lot to be found on the web, but mostly not this informative and well layed out.
cheers!
