Yep. It was nice again. Quite a lot of people actually. 55. And finally some colleagues from the Netherlands. Wished I could have stayed longer in the Irish Pub. Big thanks to Owei for pulling it off again. Great event!

Is this a record? Apart from the drinks what was the highlight of the day?

The thing that the V-ray guy mentioned (Softimage is a complete production solution, not a particle simulation tool) is the biggest message of the day, I would say.

I have an idea. Perhaps next time members can wear their forum IDs like a badge or something? Otherwise you could be standing beside a guy you frequently chat with, and have no clue! Since activity in XSIBase is really low, and most people use the same id there as they do here, there won't be too much confusion about this.

Hi all,

Wanted to do a "little report" on the Uebetage, in anticipation of the videos. But I'm not going to spoil too much x_x

First of all I want to thank - and - congratulate Oliver, on being able to organizing another Softimage event. The 4th one already!
An event that is getting more popular every year, as even more people registered than last year, and not importantly, showed up too! ;-)
Appr. 60'ish people attended this year.

So around 9:45 people started to walk in, and slowly the rows of seats were filled with enthusiastic people.

After some last minute taming of recalcitrant hardware (blaming that Murphy guy...), all was well and SESUCHT kicked off the Uebertage with a detailed presentation on how they produced the "Deutsche FernsehLotterie Paper World"commercial.
Starting with the first basic steps of sketches and getting reference footage, they went through the whole process of the first animatics, slowly moving towards integrating mocap, and finally showing the final steps of rendering, compositing and grading.
It's very nice to see how other companies work on these things.

After a small coffee break to let the information sink in, we moved on to the next presentation of our own plugin wizard Eric Mootz.

He presented his upcoming emFluid5, a upgraded and enhanced version to v4.
The combination with Holger's Fluid shader for MR (open beta for now) showed some very good looking smoke animations.
I know a lot of us are waiting for this.
But Eric wouldn't be Eric, if not add a ton of new features to emFluid 5. You can visualize almost everything that's happening inside the simulation.
Really cool, and very fast sim times. He even got inspired after seeing Helge's FE stuff. Maybe emFluid get's some FE cross-coding at some point.
Next he presented his new emTopolizer, a tool that is capable of handling even more polygon data than before. There's also a new set of compounds that will do some amazing stuff. Some of this new behavior is seen in the new "Nissan Altima" https://vimeo.com/44288380 car commercial.
Wait for the video to see what's possible, it's hard to explain as Eric added even more possibilities to this new version of Polygonizer. :-B

After these first two presentations it was time for lunch, and we were moved towards the restaurant, where a (free) lunch was served. The restaurant was perfectly organized for the big group, and in no time everybody had food in front of him/her. Lunch talk was -of course- about all the things we've seen and how we wished we had Eric's upcoming plugins for that job we just delivered. Like always ;-)

So after lunch people returned to the presentation room for the second session of the day.

Kamen and Michael from Chaos Group kicked off the second part of the presentation sessions.
They gave a detailed presentation of Vray, and were they are now with development. They had the crowd laughing on the becoming famous "that looks really good for a particle program" joke. Also the whole licensing scheme of Vray was explained very clearly, very important when buying into Vray.
Switching between render presentations and slides, we could see Vray is still actively being developed for Softimage. A really nice feature is the option to save out geometry to a proxy, so this can be reused and massively help with memory reduction in scene and rendering.
For the Uebertage they offered a really nice discount, and also offered complete test packages for the people who were interested in testing out Vray. No real surprise here these sets moved hands really quickly. Also Kamen and Micheal had a lot of people asking questions about Vray.

Again, a short coffee brake to process information and get something to drink.

Than it was time for Helge Mathee to show off Fabric Engine.
Helge probably can match 'words per minute' to our own Mark Schoennagel, as he was able to put a ton of information in his presentation.
After the explanation of what Fabric Engine is, and does, Helge showed off an direct connection to Softimage. Here he showed running FE code inside Softimage, and the code still being fully tweakable by custom build PPG's.
Also, the FE code will run the same way in e.g. Maya, so the code has to be written only once as it does/performs exactly in both apps.
I also advice to watch the video when it shows up, as it will give you that 'a-ha' moment.
That's what I noticed all over the room when Helge was halfway through his presentation. A lot of head nods when people suddenly understood the massive potential of FE. I know everybody was trying to talk to Helge later on of what was possible already with FE and SI.

Edit:
Ok, some of this stuff has become available on the web:
FE CAPI: http://vimeo.com/50165431
FE CAPI/FEDG: http://vimeo.com/50233098
FE CAPI in SI: http://vimeo.com/50290984

The last presentation of the day was reserved for the people of Polynoid. They showed off some of their very recognizable work from the past years, including recently finished ones. Presented by two of the team, one - who was not to be named at all - was a bit "shy" to present too.... ;)
Taking turns, they explained in a very relaxed way, how the commercials came to their final result. Showing sketches, renders, animation tests, all explained in a nice and informal way.
Really nice and informative stuff here. Their presentation wrapped up a very interesting and great day.

Everybody was invited to meet later on for food and drinks, something a lot of people didn't have to be asked twice. So if I forgot something in the stuff above, I blame it on the bar :ymparty:
There were also some nice give-away goodies as a bonus. So if you didn't pick up your commemorative UT2012 coffee mug, shame on you!! 8-}

It was a nice European showup; people from Holland, Germany, Austria, Switserland, Bulgaria and more showed up in Siegen. I talked to a lot of people that day, and it was great to finally link a face to the names on this forum or the xsi mailinglist.
If I didn't talk to you.... sorry!!!! :ymhug:

And off course a big thanks to all the presenters, making yesterday a great event!!

rob

Edit: fixed incorrect mention for emTopolizer.. sorry Eric, I blame it on the Humpen ;)

Rob, this was a fantastic report, and really made me feel I was there in some way.
I would have loved to have attended, but you gave me the next best thing until the video
appears.

Thank you for taking the time to write this up and post it here.

It is VERY much appreciated!

Perry

Hey Rob!

Thanks a lot for this great review! I´m very happy that everyone was enjoying the show, so that all the efforts pay out at least ;) After checking the lists, we also broke a record with over 60 participants, which is great!
It was great to meet you in person also Jasper (greets form here ;) ) and some other guys I´ve never met before.
I´ll edit the videos as soon as possible.

Cheers!
oliver

PS. If someone who visited us missed to take part in the Vray promo, just give me a shout..!!

Hi Oli,

Thanks! :D

To all: I added some links to the Fabric Engine vimeo site. There are a couple of videos there, showing things Helge presented about Fabric Engine.
They were released after Helge did his presentations at the Uebertage. So we had the exclusive!!! :ymparty:

That would go nicely with a UT2013 beer mug or "Humpen" :D

I also have to say congrats to Oliver for this (again) great event. It was very informative as well as nice varied. I love the mixture of technical and production related presentations. Rork recaped it very well. Unfortunately I had to leave in the early evening because of a running job. What a pity, working instead of having some beer :)

Hey there guys!

@Rob: THANK YOU for your fabulastic-magnificent-o-great resumé of our great Ubertage event! What fun it was to read it and rememeber all those little moments. :ymapplause:

@Oliver a.k.a owei: THANK YOU for re-re-re-organizing what has become a hell of a nice tradition! :ymapplause: Looking forward to next year!

@Rob: hey, I was NOT talking about emPolygonizer on the Ubertage, but about emTopolizer!! But I forgive you because we had such a great time in the pub (twice) ;)

@all: the tool that I presented at Ubertage has been released. Here is a video tutorial in which I talk about the new addon:
emTopolizer 1.00 Tutorial 01 - Walk Through

Take care,
