ZBrush FiberMesh to strands compound

Post by rray » 28 Jan 2012, 00:40

Florian Eberle posted this compound on the mailing, looks interesting
ha, charging twenty bucks, those little ....

if you don't need curves but can live with strands - try this one.

just import you fiber mesh, get an empty pointcloud and hook up the compound.
you'll have to specify the sides and segments of the original fiber mesh.

i guess it would need some more love to prepare the strands for a nice simulation, but the base is there.

have fun

And there I was drooling over a video about fibermesh to splines in max.

This is great!

sweeet ! This is great, thanks a bunch.

Just did a quick test with a little character wip. Just 15 minutes of grooming in Zbrush, converted to strands, rendered in Arnold:

Head looks great, looking forward to testing it too.
FiberMesh is a nice feature, the only thing I'm missing (maybe literally) is a way to mask hair by paining on the head surface after it's been created.

What I also miss is a "make hair shorter" brush. Looks like there's only a brush to make it longer.

Thanks Mister Blue, yep you're right, it's supposed to be a caricature of Job Cohen.

Same dude, other wig :-)

Hey Toonafish how are you getting the strands to bend/wave like they do in BPR? I've got the fibermesh and the compoud + point cloud all hooked up but the strands are totally stiff... :-\

I'm getting somewhat strange results too - the strands seem to think the tips of the fibermesh are the roots - the 'shape' cylinders are at the ends.

Also - strands seem to draw a segment back to the origin from the tip.

Any setting tips on set up or exporting from zb?

The smooth brush shortens hair BTW, not sure if this is the intended use or the best way to do it but it works

my, things go around :D

just wanted to let you know that i finally managed to give the compound a little more love :x
i've packed the whole thing into an addon, so it's mainly a single click solution now.
and i've prepared the strands so it's possible to work with the built in Strand Dynamics setup now.

i will post some kind of documentation (maybe even a little video) and some examples tomorrow. (fingers crossed)

in the meantime just grab the zip i attached, unpack and install the contained addon.
after installation you'll find a new menu entry Get>>Primitive>>FiberMesh To Strands.
just select your imported Fibersand run. if things go well you'll have your FinerMesh converted into strands.

have fun
flo

btw. very cool model Toonafish!

the error states that soft can't find the necessary compounds as they don't seem to get registered when installing the addon :(

solution:
after installing the addon you have to either restart soft or click the little update icon on the nodes panel (right next to the search field) in any icetree, so the compounds get loaded.

that should get you started.
let me know if you still have problems

nullo problemo rray ;)

so here's a little video showing how the 'FiberMesh To Strands' works.

download the addon here:
http://www.florianeberle.com/downdown/F ... trands.zip
(creates the menu entry 'FiberMesh To Strands' under Get>>Primitive)

or the bare ICE compounds here:
http://www.florianeberle.com/downdown/F ... pounds.zip

and here's a little extra information:

have fun
