3D Coat Applink for Softimage released

Post by Hirazi Blue » 05 Nov 2010, 10:28

Haven't had time to test it yet, but the official 3D Coat Applink for Softimage (beta) has been released. At the moment it's available for Softimage 2011(x64) and 2010(x32&x64). Download and links to two vimeo videos can be found here

Well, I haven't touched it in a while, as I fell back on my own little custom importer (not fit for public use, I'm afraid). The Applink seemed to work quite nicely at some point, but I personally disliked (and didn't need) the automatic switching between applications, so a simple import/export functionality fit my personal needs better...

I tried it to day. I have interest in a (presumption) superior UV painting capability compared to zbrush.
Exoport to 3dcoat work well, but when I try to reimport in XSI I receive this message in the script editor: WARNING : File C.\Usersa\name\documents\3d-coatV3\Exchange\textures.txt
and in the file command I read a orange message: C:\Users\name\Documents\3d-Coat\Exchange\textures.txt can not removed!
any idea?

Just to get a level playing field (so I know what to (re)install):
did you use the version of the Applink available in the local backup at rray.de
or the latest one you can find in this post at the 3D Coat forum?
And the warning you quote from the script editor seems to be missing some info, is this the whole text?

Okay, I've installed 3DCoat 3.5.17 and the most recent Applink for x64 and (sadly?) I cannot reproduce your warning message. The only things I had to do was to check that the correct paths were set in the Exchange & the 3DCoat application path.
The fact that I cannot reproduce the problem doesn't mean a thing though,
so if you could provide some more info, I'd still be willing to try to "get to the bottom of this".
What version of 3D Coat are you running? Only the newest ones are "Applink enabled" AFAIK.
What happens after the warning itself?
It being just a warning and not an error might imply, that it isn't such a "big deal"...

As usual you (and many other SI community user) are really kind and helpful :)

I now reinstalled 3dcoat. Ok, now it work, so I think it was a installation issue.
Ok, doing some test, but I find some problems:
- Cannot export many separate object with different UV (but I know only SI can handle different uv for every object, so this is not a problem)
- When I turn back in XSI the object was "missing", it return so big I cannot centre it in my user view (must hardly resize).
- My render output is totally black! Why? Here a render tree immage:

this is the simple light setup (I want only control how turn back the texture from 3dcoat):

I find it a really useful tool, automatically generate a render tree (I don't know how good is), 3dcoat instead zbrush, there is a more photoshop similar layer (I refer to paint option, don't know at all any other aspect of this software).

I found and solve problems: only need to export one object (with aone UV) and then, when reimport be sure to check the Replace object option :)
