Custom GEAR rigs and the synoptic?

Hi guys

Has anyone had any experience creating a custom GEAR synoptic for a creature using the various GEAR modules but not the preset guides? I've never created any synoptic before so its all foreign to me.
Or do you simply use the on screen controls, and forego the various convenient selection options and things like mirror?
