Ah yes that old one - 'we don't want any commercial software, we want free and/or open source so we control everything'. Have seen that being tried before, and it's always failed.

Unless Autodesk and others have technology that will change substantially the DCC in the future the law of diminishing returns kicks in.
In last years Blender have been making strides from being totally unable to compete to be near competing. So unless technological pace accelerates and Blender can't follow there is not that much risk.
Depends of course on the area of expertise that the company will be dealing with vs Blender and competition.
