3D printing with SoftImage - quetstion

Post by Shredder565 » 02 Jan 2015, 06:19

I uploaded some of my 3P0 parts and one user commented with this >>

>>>>>
On a side note, I noticed that the neck has a far more dense mesh than the head, and I guess that´s the reason why it came out so good. I would estimate that the head needs a much finer mesh for a full-size print. Does your programm do that ?

I considered to try and print the head today, but I would wait if you could provide a finer mesh with finer facets. Thanks again>>>

For those that dabble in 3D printing, what exactly am I being asked to do?
If I'm understanding it right, he'd like the head of the character to have a thicker 'inner wall' than it has currently...but not sure if i'm understanding correctly..

the character we are trying to print is the 3P0 head...

this was the neck in question. I modeled it in softimage and someone printed it...

thanks :)

I am sorry Shredder565, but i can't understand what you are trying to say.

Btw i'll soon start 3D printing.

Neither can I ;o)....

I copied and pasted the question EXACTLY as it was wrote, but I don't think English is the posters first language, so there may be a translation error or two. Wish I could expand on it.

But was hoping someone here familiar with 3D printing might be able to make the gist of it ;o)

I think he wants a denser mesh. If so, Instead of Sub-d-ing your head (unsing "+"), you can make the sudivs real geo by selecting all polys, and doing MODEL->Modify->Polymesh->Local Subdivision Refinement

Of course remove any Subd interpolation before doing so (using minus "-")

And/Or doing "Subdivide Polygon/Edges" if you want to subdivide without rounding anything.

Ahh, OK.

I am not familiar with how 3D Printing works, so I was wondering if the same term for printing applied to what it means in design...

I'm learning as I go. thanks for clarifying ;o)

Can you show the mesh?

Btw since the post is about 3d printinng can someone enlighten me on valid 3d print geometry formats?
Do i need to export in stl? If yes any good converter? for example obj to stl?

Personally I so far have only converted stl files to obj files, not the other way around,
using MeshLab and was rather happy with the results.
MeshLab provides conversions the other way round as well, but I personally haven't tested this.
;)

Maybe you can get an old version, might still work.
