Hi, i've recently found this http://cgru.info/ for network rendering.
I know very well RoyalRender and his quality but for now this one sound interesting because it's free...
Seems a bit complicated to setup, did it worth a look ?

Afanasy
Afanasy, a free open source render farm manager, was created in a collaboration of
15 mostly Ukrainian and Russian studios like Cinelab VFX and Terminal FX.
This is the Softimage integration of Afanasy. While the set up of the renderfarm itself is probably a little challenging, there seems to be a lot of helpful information available on the main cgru site, as well as on various other websites like this one on blogspot.
Some helpful hints might also be found in links from this recent mailing list thread.

Re: CGRU opensource feedbacks
Nice find!
Perhaps you could just try setting it up?
Installation seems pretty straight-forward unless you build your own install..

Also seems to have quite interesting options! http://cgru.info/software/xsi
such as;
and that sounds excellent for just that! (in one go)
But do let us know if your impressions if you try it! ;;) (and/or if you miss things from RoyalRender)

and most of all;Simulate : Force not to simulate by setting Play Control to Frame Range
He uses particle seed as an example, but there are many times when you would want to see how an effect or something looks like with different values within a range when "lookdev-ing"VariRender
VariRender can help you to automatically increment some value and to render scene with different parameters at once.
For example, particles with different seed, to increase their quantity by compositing.
VariRender Parameters:
Enable VariRender - Turn it on or off.
Attribute - Attribute name to variate. Change some object parameter and look script editor, or command line for name.
Start Value - First value to start from.
Step - Value increment.
Count - Quantity of value increments.
Afanasy Job
This is a job from CGRU examples. Rendering two passes with VariRender.
and that sounds excellent for just that! (in one go)

Re: CGRU opensource feedbacks
At first glance, seems to be missing the ability to check pass checkboxes for submission.
You can submit current, all, or a specific one at a time.
Not that it's a huge deal but..
