Windows 8

Post by dwigfor » 17 Oct 2012, 19:26

Just wondering if anyone was running Windows 8(dev). Any foreseeable problems with Softimage?

I am a big fan of Valve and do respect Gabe's opinion, but I think he is wrong. Granted, I've never used Linux, and probably won't for a long, long time; games or no games. Maybe people are fine with Windows 7 and will skip or wait on Windows 8. Improved Snap features alone make me want to upgrade.

I'm looking forward to the i5 Surface.

Then again, I never had any major issues with Vista... (my biggest issue, if I remember right, were Softimage related; licensing issues with XSI 6 and some viewport quirks, FX tree not able to connect to correct ports).

At this point, I may upgrade, try it out. I will still be primarily running Windows7.

What I am concerned with is the lack of information about OS improvements relating to professional computing, specifically DCC applications. With past Windows releases we would hear about new file systems, 64-bit architecture, etc. This time around all the noise is about the UI. I am not concerned with the tiled UI - I plan on giving it a fair shake but will probably wind up turning it off if I upgrade.

While that Valve article is a fun read it is really just opinion. I would really rather see something from Tom's Hardware or Anandtech with some facts and hear from other users to see if the upgrade is even worth it. Win 7 has been great for me, very few complaints.

W8 is not all GUI/Metro, although I agree it is a big step away from the 'regular' Windows we all got used to (and/or hate sometimes)..

There's lot of info around on the web on new stuff under the hood to make it faster, the MS blog has tons of articles on 'building W8'.
The tests I ran on my old AMD system does seem to support the speed bump.
Booting is a hell of a lot faster, especially with a SSD. From boot to desktop (yes, it's still there and yes, you have to click that tile) is about 10 sec.

So unless the app is doing something really odd, it should run the same, as not slightly faster in W8.
But if W7 is doing it's job, and you don't see any real, direct value in the Metro apps any time soon, stick with W7 for the time being I guess.

I'm slowly warming up on W8, and I can see the lure of a W8 (Pro) tablet in the future for semi-production work and media consumption.
At least more than the iPad that is. No offence to people who have one ;)

I guess I'll have to dig a little deeper to see what those other enhancements to Win8 are, haven't had the time.

I am with you on the Win8 Pro version of the tablet - that is beginning to look appealing. As an iPad owner who wants to do a little more with a tablet device I like the prospect of ditching iTunes file management, being able to use a USB cable instead of Apple proprietary junk and think the keyboard cover could be really useful. Does anyone know if the Surface tablet can use a stylus? That would seal it for me.

Not sure if it has pressure sensitivity.. There are 2 digitizers in Surface- 1 for touch, 1 for digital ink

Sold.

I do hope it has pressure sensitivity, or at least the capability of using a special pen to enable it. But the accuracy is huge - I hate drawing on the iPad.

There's not just the Surface Pro for that.

Asus, Samsung and Lenovo offer W8 Pro tablets with digitizers. And they will be on sale soon, not after January 2013.
The Asus TF801C looks promising, so does the Lenovo ThinkPAd Tablet 2.
Not sure on the Samsung digitizer, can't tell yet if it is a Wacom one.

here's the comparison list for the MS Surface tablet, although it's not that different in specs than all the other ones offered:

I have always had an eye on the Lenovo convertible tablets but never pulled the trigger on one. Good to know that there are going to be more options out there. Once a bunch of them hit retail I am going to try to make a list of which one has what kind of digitizer and whether they are pressure sensitive or not. Will report back here if/when I get one. I just blew my money on a GoPro Hero3... Watch their promo video, it is awesome.

Sorry, but this thread was one that started off with a interest in Windows 8, and the accompanying hardware.

If you have nothing solid to post here, stay away with personal feelings about this.

There's no need to run the basic flame war on an OS, that's the territory of 15 year olds.

I have the 90 days edition installed here, testing it for over a month.
bad things:
-the metro ui is usable only with 2 monitors, it feels like those console games ported to pc, now they made a system for tablets but release it also for pcs...
-system is enforcing max. 2 windows per desktop
-dumbed down applications with only few options to configure them!!!!! wtf

good things:
-feels more 'fluid' than w7
-metro can be something really cool, maybe after service pack 5, some things need to be changed for desktops
-app market, maybe...

I know you can disable metro but then whats the point of upgrade? the under-the-hood stuff, who gives a shit about it...
If they wanted to make system more user friendly, they should also look at newest additions to LINUX
Maybe averange user using pc for office/web stuff will be pleased...like my mom or dad who thinks they can run only one application at a time.

As for this Steam guy, no wonder he's against a system that has an app market built-in...

Im pretty sure it will be great system for gadget devices like ipad clones with android crap system.
