Contour shader?

Contour shader?
In the Material Node you can find a slot called "Contour", which according to the XSIDocs is used "to add contour effects to objects’ edges, such as a cartoon effect shader". I'm guessing this has something to do with the "Contour" shaders Mental Ray has on offer, but I can't find anything resembling an MR Contour Shader within (X)SI. So now my question would be: what do you plug into "Contour" slot? Would it be possible to port the MR Contour Shaders to use within (X)SI? And if so, why hasn't this done before/made publicly available? Or is this simply "broken" functionality?

From what I heard, not easy to do inside XSI, especially not by creativity with SPDLs.
