Very promising start.
Funny, however, that while DOF has been discussed "extensively" in this thread already,
the seemingly necessary main ingredient, steam, to pull this off, is as of yet unmentioned.
(Oops, I just mentioned it...)
As you obviously must have some ideas how to handle any steam in this image
in a convincing manner, would you mind sharing some of them?
;)

Thanks for the interest guys - the DOF isn't a major concern for me. As said, the comp will be done in AE, grade will be done in speed grade. I'm planning on adding quite a bit of steam- there will be steam that hugs the floor, and steam coming out of pipes, not to mention steam coming out of his backpack vent. Just wrapped up UVing the character, now for texturing, then rigging, pose, steam and render. Ill be uploading progress on Monday - comments are always welcome. Oh, for steam I'm thinking ice and volumetric shader, but maybe slipstream?? It will be interesting to see how VRay accepts or outputs volumetrics. I'm interested in other solutions though if people have suggestions? Even advice if you have xperience with VRay and volumetrics?

Looking forward to the steam work. I have no personal experience with it but I've been told that V-ray does not accept volume rendering at all, as in not supported yet. Have they changed this recently? I'm very curious to know if they have.

I'd also love to see something done with Slipstream/Fury so either way, keep it up :)

An update - I've used imagery to show an example of what I hope to achieve for the Steam. This is more or less what final colour and grade will be. Please comment on character texture and anything else you feel might be of importance. C&C's always welcome. Now to Rig and Pose and Ice particles . . . So I hope to get final image out soon.

You cant have Steampunk without some steam (well probably you can).

Nice work.

Sorry to be another person to mention the DOF again but it seems way too strong. It's making this character look very small (unless that is how he is supposed to be?).

I have a real weakness for overdriving the DOF. The character is not meant to appear miniature, so ill pull the DOF back - just a bit. Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I've been experimenting with DOF in post and under closer examination, the problem I was having with Lensblur in Photoshop was not the fault of the filter but it appears that the depth pass is not anti-aliased at all in SI/MR (even though the rest of the image is). I'm not a composting expert so maybe that's normal. Not sure if there is some way to change this or perhaps the depth channel should be rendered at higher res, I don't know.

I tried DOF in Composite and it seems quite nice to work with. I'm starting to like it.

My last update till final - On all levels I'm pretty happy. Couldn't get steam rendered out of VRay? so just comping steam into plate. My current changes for final image is a re-pose on character to match initial drawing a bit closer, and a couple of texture changes. The steam coming out of the flute needs to be more transparent, and I'd like to push an incidence pass on character, just to separate him from the background a little? C&C's are welcome. Thanks for following, and hope you digg.

The picture is very nice & "comping in" the steam works IMHO,
but I'm afraid you're really going to need a lot of more steam for the final picture.
It's called STEAMpunk for a reason...
