Hello,

I finally found this Softimage site again after not being able to find it for so long.

Please consider adding metatags to the home page and all other pages (especially the home page though), so Google can index this site and include it in the list of Softimage related websites... This code may seem unimportant, but if you put this in your header, within a few months this site will be ranked much, much higher on Google when people search for Softimage forums.

The text goes into the "header" portion of the site:

Code:
<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

<title>SI-Community - the Unofficial Softimage Discussion Forum</title>

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">

<meta name="description" content="Welcome to the Unofficial Softimage Community forums! A user-centric place for all discussions, tutorials, shaders, code, and everything else related to Autodesk Softimage!" />

<meta name="keywords" content="XSI, Softimage, Autodesk, Softimage forums, Softimage forum, Softimage discussion, XSI forum, XSI discussion, Softimage user group, XSI user group, Softimage mental ray, Softimage tutorials, Softimage gallery, Softimage community, Softimage groups, Autodesk Softimage, Softimage XSI, Softimage vray, XSI vray, XSI mental ray, animation, ICE, mental ray, rendering, 3D" />

</head>

Some of this is corny but it helps a lot, even though it may not seem like it. The description tag is what shows up as the text under the link in Google by default. If you don't have a description tag, Google leaves it blank or picks stuff at random, and drops you in rank.

I know this sounds like marketing crud but I'm just trying to help the site. I would like a good SI forum and right now we are split between 4 forums.

Very good suggestion, thanks... :-bd
I'd have to look into it, so I placed it on my ever-growing "to do" list... :!! ;)

edit: when I "google" with a query "Softimage community" our little forum does seem to show up in second place (after the Area") and when I do the same with "Softimage forum" it also seems to show up on the first page of results. But that could all have to do with Google remembering my earlier queries...

It's normal if google is indexing the right way this community because nowadays meta tags aren't used very much by search engines... (otherwise it would be too easy)
Besides that, yes, I think too that the description tag would be a great addition to guide a little more users ;-).

Oh, a thing in my mind about this forum:
I'm used to checking users profiles (for example to search all posts by a user, or simply sending a PM), but it seems that when we are in a thread we can't click on a username, so it's not very easy to access to a profile (but when we are in a thread list we can click on a username in the right collumn). I'm right or I'm missing something ?

PS: Thank you a thousand time to keep working on this community! it's so great to have an alternative to xsibase (good but, so old and so hard to navigate )

Sorry if I misunderstand you, but when logged on you can access the profile of any poster by clicking the "profile" button in the lower left-hand corner of every post... ;)

I was searching for "softimage forums" a few weeks ago and couldn't find it at all, even though I knew this forum was around.

Google does index an entire site, but keywords and description do matter because Google weights text found at the start of the webpage higher than a few random words scattered on the page. The page title also matters. That's why I said "it may not seem like it" :D

Anyway, this is a nice forum, Hirazi Blue, thanks for setting it up.

Well, I am looking into it some more and I even added a description and a keyword meta tag to our "overall_header", but webtools like the metatag analyzer still do not seem to find them... I'm at all loss at the moment, will continue later. (If someone knows what I am obviously doing wrong, please feel free to enlighten me).
=(( ;)

BTW: you can thank me for a lot of things, but not for setting up this community, that was entirely owei's "fault"... :D

Okay I found out what I was doing wrong earlier. This community now sports description & keywords meta tags:

Quote:
Title: www.si-community.com • Index page (this is on a per page basis)
Description: www.si-community.com - unofficial Autodesk Softimage community
Keywords: Autodesk, Softimage, XSI, 3D

Meta tags analysis (courtesy of the metatag analyzer).

Title:
Title relevancy to page content is very poor.
The Title relevancy to page content is 25%.

Description:
Description meta tag relevancy to page content is poor.
The Description meta tag relevancy to page content is 40%.

Keywords:
Keywords meta tag contains no errors.
This tag contains 4 keywords and 28 characters.
Keywords meta tag relevancy to page content is good.
The keywords meta tag relevancy to page content is 75%.

There would be some room for improvement, but I don't know if it's really worth the extra effort. I do however keep an open mind to any helpful suggestions... ;)
