ICE shatter???

Post by Hirazi Blue » 27 Jun 2010, 17:39

Could be that I am once again missing something, but after Helge Mathee teased us all with pictures and movies (now all offline) from a "shattering toolset using ICE" he had in development as a personal project, which by the best of knowledge never made it to the public (but please correct if I'm wrong :ympray: ), I was wondering if there have been any other serious attempt at creating such a toolset recently (with or even without ICE), that did get released? And if not: why not? :p

Looks interesting...
As I am not at my Softimage PC right now and all I can see in the Voronoi.rar file are a dll for both 32/64 and the source code (no docs whatsoever), how would you set this up?

Hi guys, my first comment on the forum...
I got this kind of working, you can install the .dll in the plugin manager, but I think it needs to be done every time you open xsi. First there has to be a pointcloud, than create a simulated ice tree from that, add emit from anything, particle rate type to total number and rate will define the number of fragments. Then just select the pointcloud and click on primitive/polygon mesh/voronoi. The thing is, it seems like it can only generate fragments from the bounding box of the particles but I'm newbie in ICE so I hope I'm wrong.

cheers

Can't help you there, as I still plead "newbie" when it comes to ICE myself,
however thanks for your comment & welcome to our little community... :ymparty:

Let's hope, someone will come along soon(ish) with some further explanation... :ymhug:

In related news:
Over at the German Softimage Community Helge Mathee "admitted",
he is currently working on a shatter tool for studioNest that will be online soon.
In his own words, roughly translated by me:
actually it's a live-operator, able to shatter using particles, a multi-core Voronoi solution.
Sounds very promising, I'd say. ;)

WOW!!!

Helge done it again ^:)^ :ymhug: :D :ymparty:

Amazing range of control, and that speed! And it's going to be released as freeware, it's not going to be better than that is it?

I only can say a big and well meant 'thank you' to the people at StudioNEST for giving away such a great set of tools for free :ymhug:

holy moses, this looks utterly brilliant.

Oh, and [edit]:

If it's okay to quote from it for those of you that don't speak german, in that same thread, Helge says it's not going to work on 7.0.1, and that it will have bullet physics integrated.

On the mailing list Helge Mathee speaks of a separate plug-in for utilizing Bullet Physics in Softimage:
we will also release a plugin soon that implements bullet physics for Softimage.

Anybody with experience in bullet (maya, blender) can share info about its advantages over physx?

Well, I can't speak from experience, but I can quote something that sounds relevant from the Mailing List, where Andrew Nicholas mentions the following in a discussion about the problems with collisions in ICE RBD and:
I'm looking at Bullet in Houdini at the moment. It's got a fair way to go in terms of features but at least it does proper collision. Not as fast as ICE though, even with bounding boxes.
quoted from here

And I'm guessing the "it does proper collision" part of that quote would be the main reason for studioNest to create a Bullet-Softimage interoperability plug-in.

don't know much about bullet, but Digital Domain has chosen it to make all 2012 destructions. And that must be for a good reason! =)

Apparently Bullet is very good, Cinema 4D and Light Wave Core are using this engine too.

On the German Softimage (again :-j ) Helge Mathee posted,
that he has run into some difficulties concerning the implementation
of the Shatter plug-in (if I read his remark correctly, that is),
so it might take a (little?) while longer before it's ready for release.
