Interacting with surface

Post by Judicator » 06 Jun 2013, 10:26

Hi, guys.

I have a task and I need to figure out how to make it.
Basically I need to make a cell membrane, which is made from lots of lipids (I use ICE particles for that). Of course they don't fly around in space, so I use "stick to location". So far so good.
The problem starts here. I need to animate a protein passing through that membrane, so basically particles should always stick to location, maybe move on it a bit, but when the protein passes - they have to move over to let it through, and after that go to original position. How the hell do I do that?
Tried with forces, with collisions, but still cannot make it work.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds complex, have you considered faking it?

Something like this?

It's still ICE (partly) but without actual collision. A lot easier to adapt and work with.

Here is what i would do...
It's using an unsimulated approach. Although, through the crossproduct there is a swirly kind of motion when passing through the membrane, but maybe my example can serve as inspiration.

Hope this helps

P.S.: Just in case you're not using it already, but i find Eric Mootz' emTools-ToolSet very handy for distributing the e.g. lipids equally on the surface (see: http://www.mootzoid.com/wb/pages/softim ... mtools.php)

That's exactly what I need. Though I cannot achieve the same result. Even when using your picture as a reference, my particles move a bit on a sphere (membrane), while yours are still, and they do not move away from the protein.
What could I miss? Some settings maybe?

Oh sorry, I should have posted the scene as well. It's just some ICE spheres staying on the emit location and then just animating the emit mesh with envelope thingy's. A lot easier to adapt if a client (even if that client is yourself) needs changes done quickly.
