multiple crashes

Post by Hirazi Blue » 01 Dec 2015, 21:05

I am very close to utter despair. On my new computer I am running Softimage 2015 R2-SP2 on a Windows 10 machine with a Geforce GTX 970 graphics card with an up-to-date driver, but Softimage keeps on crashing on me. I haven't been able to reproduce any good reason for this and I don't know what to try next. I enabled autosave to once every minute, but that is very disruptive and thus very annoying and so far I have found Softimage doesn't seem to be able to recover any of the crashed scenes any more. It doesn't even offer the option...
I was under the impression, most users are using Softimage 2015 R2-SP2 on Windows 10 without any problems, apart from the weird "floating window without borders" problem and I thought the Geforce GTX 970 was widely used as well. But now I'm starting to fear, buying this new computer was a big mistake...

edit: Is there anything in the driver settings I should look out for specifically or should I try installing a specific older driver?
edit 2: these aren't "heavy scenes"BTW...

crashing when doing what? just randomly whenever even when doing nothing? or just when rendering? or..?

it may not be a windows thing.. did you install the GFX card yourself? is there enough power to it? most GTX have different 1x6 pin and 1x8pin extra power needs or even 2 x6 or 2x 8 pin PCIe cables from PSU on top of the card, if one of them is not connected properly or GFX card not sat properly then it would exhibit this type of behaviour. - I know from experience. it has enough power to boot but when trying to run and not enough Wattage , results in random crashes on easy scenes. not good.

not saying this is your problem of course, try a fairly demanding 3D game out, if that is crashing oddly too then your GFX card / power supply is an issue

Thanks. but I have been playing "Fallout 4", the only game I currently own, on the machine without problems, but I don't know if that game is "demanding" enough, in your sense of the word. The problem with Softimage seems to be a different one then. Many (but not all) of the crashes do seem to occur when or after I have opened a preview render...

Is it just with Softimage 2015? Do you have 2014 installed, so you can test if it is related to the version of SI?

As I am not on subscription any more, I lost my "previous versions" usage rights, sadly... :-?
If someone can tell me how to install an earlier version of 2015 (vanilla or SP1) next to my SP2 I could try that at least...

If you have the installer for 2014 still on disk, you can run the 'trial' to see what's happening.

I can recall it's kind of difficult to run multiple versions of 2015 on the same pc? Not running 2015 here btw...

Let me BUMP this, as the problems persist. One of the suspects in all of this currently is the preview render window. If I have one open and change anything, chances are good that my Softimage will crash... I've already created a toolbar script to bring up the preview render window only after saving the scene first.

so new mental ray live preview window is more broken? Not using mental ray much but when have used it lately (2015 R2 SP2) has not caused crashes. but then I never have it set to refresh auto I always want to do it when I say with a right click so could be there is a newer issue, but always found was pretty flaky in general anyway with a live preview and then change a material shader or open new ppg had plenty of them type crashes so disabled auto refresh and crashes went away.

Stupid question: how do I disable auto refresh automatically for the preview render,
other than manually clicking the lock icon?

To reasure you i can affirm you than XSI 2015 on a recent machine (3 mount old i7 and with a geforce 970) is running very well without crashing (at least not more than the normal).

... but wait ! This is on windows 7 !!
Because Win 8 and 10 are just to me a desperate move from microsoft, a bad one and they do just what Autodesk is doing, pilling code over code, over and over, plus i don't have an hotmail account and now you are forced to...

As I am stuck with Windows 10 that wasn't very helpful either... :ymhug:

Aha, you're talking about the render region not the "dedicated" preview render window... ;)

So...

Do you have only MR installed? It might be interesting to see what e.g. Arnold or Redshift does.
And this is only with the Render>Preview option, right? The renderregion doesn't have any issues?

It could be some weird OpenGL issue, where the popup winodw is crashing the app.

I have 3delight installed also and the problem exists even there. I haven't tested the render region enough to say for sure if it crashes less. But first indications are that it indeed could be a problem primarily related to the floating preview render view...

Sorry to hear that m8 i feel bad that i participated in telling you buying this setup.
I hope it is just a temporary problem, some driver or some not well connected PSU cable or smthing :(

what psu model you running on?
Do you get power loss or just crash?

Any other crashes in general when cpu or gpu on 100% on other apps? try to recreate crash conditions with a benchmark.
