Xsi crash at startup

Post by hidalgo » 16 Sep 2014, 17:42

Hello people,

For how strange as it sound, all my versions of xsi have stop working, i have tried everything, from checking the viewport drivers, to trash the preferences and the xsi batch command.
Once i start xsi (2014 and sp1) they both crash before loading the viewport, i can't install the 2015 cause my machine is giving me headeache with to install winsp1 so i need to stick older ones.

Someone might have some ideas on what is causing the problem? i havent install anything particularly weird so far so can't be a conflict.

win ultimate 64 is the os.

Thanks

Did you update your GeForce drivers? Or have you activated your auto-update GeForce Drivers?

I've had those problems with GeForce's drivers. Since then I only use Autodesk recommended ones. Try these drivers:

These are old drivers, I think Autodesk have newer recommendations but I haven't look. These old drivers are working OK so far so I' sticking with them. I do have some problems with Photoshop OpenGL rotation and things like that with these drivers but I almost don't use those functions so I can live meanwhile.

for some reasons i think that might be a geforce issue aswell, the link you sent is pointing me to the GTX 690, but i have a GTX 580 That is not listed on autodesk, but i have worked with it without issues till 2 month ago...

ok, got it in the right page now, testing the drivers now...

The problem I had (actually a coworker had) was that he had autoupdate activated and one day Softimage just stopped working.

GeForce drivers are quite compatible with older GPUs. I'm using these drivers with a 650 and I was using them with a 560 (I think, can't remember but it was a 500 series) a year ago.

If xsibatch won't run or crashes, I doubt it's the graphic card.
But I don't know what xsibatch did when you ran it, so I'm just guessing.

If your machine won't install Windows 7 SP1, that doesn't bode well for you. Something's messed up on the system.

Those can be safely ignored.
Can you render a frame with xsibatch or run a script?

i tried with :

echo LogMessage "Hello" > %TEMP%\test.vbs
xsibatch -processing -script %TEMP%\test.vbs

and after all the afore mentioned errors the message INFO : Hello appear, do you have some other tests you can suggest me?
i never used the batch before if not only to test eventual errors.

Thank you

tried to roll back to the raccomended nvidia drivers, its a no go, still not working.

tested Maya 2014, max 2013, mudbox 2014 all working fine!

there is some preferences stored for xsi somewhere except the usual places? i can see that keep going back to my preferences even though i have uninstall everything..

EDIT: uninstalled quicktime, rename the user folder, turned off my antivirus...not working still.

Unfortunately I don't think this fact has much diagnostic value.
Personally, I think it is more significant that you cannot install Windows 7 SP1. That makes me think your system has problems.

What preferences does it keep "going back to" ?
Softimage will re-create the default preferences in your Softimage user folder.

You wrote earlier that you "checked the viewport drivers". Does that mean you modified the default layout to show an expanded explorer and then started Softimage? Did Softimage start in that case or did it crash? For a display driver problem, Softimage would typically start with that layout, and then crash when you switched to an openGL viewpport.
