in the upper left corner of each viewport you can find the camera, the memocams and the letters X, Y and Z

when in the rightview middleclick the X button to flip the X axis and look from the left
when in the topview middleclick the Y button to flip the Y axis and look from the bottom

What exactly do you want to achieve?
AFAIK setting the "View Manager" to a preferred view isn't possible when setting up a layout.
Such operations that change the viewport setup can however be scripted
and placed in an event (for example a siOnBeginNewScene event).

i'm trying to make a layout with 5 windows, where 1 is an XSI-Explorer, then 3 is for Front / Top / Right and 1 is for perspective view.

In Edit Layout mode,
right click in the "View Manager" and select Set View Properties.

Select the layout and set the name of the cameras for each viewport, for example "top" for the camera name in B:
for the layouts, look at the doc

Interesting. I didn't know that. Thanks. ;)
Is setting this in Layout a fairly new option or has this been possible "always"?

the Layout attribute is probably from softimage 2010, or whenever Chinny added those layout buttons at the bottom left of the Softimage window

Ah, that explains a lot...
I have learned that kind of stuff ages ago and hardly ever touch it... ;)

it's not possible to have 5 viewports. You only get one view manager, which has 1 to 4 viewport.
Then you can use an object view if you need something else, but that's not going to behave like viewport you can switch to another view.

Your expected result posted in the previous page doesn't make sense. When have you ever seen the view manager split with two views on top and three on the bottom? That's what my previous reply says, it splits at the maximum of 4 views, in a square way.

Never figured we could middle click on those to get that : ) thanks!

@Frank;

The "View Manager" natively has 4 viewports
(which is maximised by default since v2012, and which you can change in the prefs)

but in your layout, you were trying to setup additional viewports on top of those native 4.
(possible but inconvenient as LucEric pointed-out.)

Although by your screenshot notes.. (looking for Top, Persp, Front, Right.. which is the default anyway),
I think your just looking for a place to fit-in an extra pane among those 4.

But that "extra" XSIExplorer pane can only go besides or under the ViewManagers' four A,B,C,D Views, acting like a single entity.

Also (FYI), for general viewport manipulation,
(mostly useful interface extras with an API for scripting things otherwise rather tricky to GET and SET)
there is the awesome and *super stirdy* (while also old.. go figure) ViewportControls 2.0 from Chinny
http://traypen.com/rr/bak/chinny/viewportcontrols.zip

Which provides a number of things, (lots.. see below) but which I personally use for a few favorites ..
like a Tear-off camera view
which creates a floating Object View clone of you current view while setting *all* ObjectView attributes for it to behave *exactly* like a regular view,

.. also a "smart" (adaptive) camera auto-keyer,
various top level menu shortcuts to otherwise burried view properties,
and QuickFlix being like a settable 1 click Quicktime viewport capture..

Details...
Viewport Controls 2.0
New Viewport and Camera Commands (for artists)
in the viewports' Camera , Visibility and View menus.
_________________

* KeyCamera

If the active viewport is a scene camera
this will key :: the local rotation and translation and the field of view, projection and focal length.

If the camera has an interest it will also key the interest's local rotation and translation.

The Camera property page has a native "Allow Autokey During navigation" option to key selected cameras.

When ViewportControl's "Key Selected Cameras" is also on,
if your selection loosely contains:
Any Cameras, Camera Roots, Interests or Groups,
-- KeyCamera will find and key the Cameras and Interests within this selection,
(even if there are other things in the selection)
and will ignore the active viewport camera (unless it's part of your selection).

_____
* Spot Light View Menu
Any viewport can look through a spotlight.
As with cameras, SpotLights have a dedicated menu.
Key SpotLight will key the rotation and translation and on its interest if it has one.

_____
* Tear Off Camera
Creates an Object View out of any view including orthographic (top/right...) views

_____
* Create Light from View
If the viewport is a Perspective "User" or "Camera" view,
a spot light is created, with the cone angle matching the camera's field of view.

If the viewport is an orthographic top, right (etc) orthographic view, a an infinite is created.

_____
* Create Camera from View
This works for Scene Cameras and SpotLights with or without an interest.

If the viewport is a Perspective "User" or "Camera" view, a new camera is created
without an interest or a parent.

This is useful for camera texture projections, as the camera can be animated.

On creation the viewport switches to the new camera, which inherits the name from the view or light source

_____
* Isolate
AKA Isolate With Options
This opens a mini ppg which has a few more options than the normal Isolate Selected

When the mini ppg is closed it will Un-Isolate all Views

_____
* TurnTableCreate
Creates a turntable camera and a controls PPG
The controls PPG can be found under the turntable model
This can be used from any view
This will also work on a sub-component selection

_____
* QuickFlix
One click to capture the viewport playback.

with QuickCaptureOptions : A few settings not found in the normal capture options

_____
* Synoptic Toolbars

ViewportSynoptic
A synoptic toolbar for the most common viewport commands

ViewSwitcher
A mini synoptic for switching between Right, Top, Front, User, Camera

* New commands for scripting

- GetViewport
- SetViewport
- SetViewportLayout
- GetViewportNumber
- GetLightFromViewport
- CopyViewport
- GetSelFilter
- CamerasFromSelection
- StringList
- StringTrim
- DeleteBranch
