How do you guys translate ICE calculations to the RenderTree

I was a bit surprised when get to know SI a little better that the Render Tree doesn't share most of nodes with the ICE Tree, meaning I can't use the same logics for surfacing.
I was trying to build a Curvatures shader, but didn't found anything useful in the Render Tree to accomplish it. So I headed ICE and was able to get it.
Now, if I understand right, Geometry Approximation Subdivision only kicks in either after all operators or at render time, so the Curvatures calculations take place before :/
Is Local Subdivision Refinement the only solution? I bet there are other situations where one would want to have the ICE calcs capabilities at render time.
ICE based renderer? kidding.
Thanks
