How you do it in Softimage? Syflex does it?

i remember an addon which can "derform by UV", look at rray.De, it can do the job i guess !

There's standard Deform by Cage operator. It's a bit heavy, but it provides a nice, interpolated result. It's much faster with short "falloff" option. By the way, using simulation, just to wrap something around spherical form, like in this video... guy seems to be somehow out of inspiration.

Leonard Koch posted a very useful compound for this on the Mailing list a while ago. I'd hunt it down if you can.
