Scene rendering fast, suddenly "Loading Scene" takes ages

Post by sant0s » 06 Jan 2017, 19:55

Hey,
I got a scene, with massive ICE instances.
The huge amount (50 million) is a single cache file that I just stretched in the mixer since there is no simulation.
The parts with simulation are quite small, I can just play them in the viewport with 1 frame per second, so no problem actually.

When I start SI and load the scene, a frame needs like 7 minutes to render, inkl. "Loading Scene".

Suddenly after same frame, the "Loading Scene" time explodes and a frame needs 30 minutes until to 90 minutes. The rendering itself again only needs some minutes, but loading needs ages...

When I close the scene, start again, skip frames until the last frame, it will again render in 7 minutes - till one point when it starts again increasing the render time.

I realized, that the RAM is running full.
Starts with 15 GB till the limit of 60 GB.

Specs for that scene: Softimage 2015 SP2, SitoA, only ICE with Standins and one emitter grid, 2 different VDBs.

Anybody had a similar situation and solved that?

Thx alot,
sant0s

Did you try...
- rendering the scene without the vdb?
- another renderer?
- using the cached sim without streching it in the mixer?

hey boris,
thx for replying :)

yes, I did try rendering withoug VDB, thats not the problem.

I'll test it with redshift demo, good idea.

the problem is, that one cache file is very large and needs long time to cache.
But will cache out some frames to check, if that helps.

btw, I found another thread in the softimage mailing list where some ppl have the same problem and there was no solution.
only solution for them was, to cache an .ass sequence.

okay, got it to run now... :)

the problem was the massive pointcloud.
the instances are already standins, but I again created one massive standin from the pointcloud.

now the memory is always low and rendering startsafter some seconds.

Yeah Markus, always pushing Softimage to the limits :ymapplause:
I wasn't aware of the possibility to create a standin from a pointcloud.

:D
its not the "export selected"-way, but under render options-> ass archives -> export frame.
"export selected" does not work for me either, gives me a 180kb file. now the file is 1,8 GB.
