Volumic spotlight problems

To simulate the exhaust from a magnetoplasmadynamic rocket engine, I've created a spotlight with a volumic property. This works great, until you look at the spotlight head on. Then, the volumic property disappears, and the light itself pretty much disappears. This is extremely annoying and not what I want to happen ... how do I fix it?

cant you just create the effect with particles ?...
