Having an transparency map act as an alpha map

Post by Filmguy » 02 Oct 2013, 11:38

Hi Guys. I'm struggling to have a transparency map act as an alpha map in Softimage. Im rendering grass on a grid with transparency active but when I pull it into After effects it still
renders the grid.

Thanks:)

Hi this could be the fault of your RGBA components, take care about the Alpha part when you mix things...

Maybe it could be also a problem with your raytracing settings in the renderer

Or simply, try plugin your transparent image into a sprite node without touchning any parametters

also you can preview the alpha directly in the render region ;-)

A "quick Google", however, seems to reveal, the problem might just as well lie on the side of After Effects (which I don't use myself), as there are numerous entries concerning AE, alphas/transparency and PNG ("used" in the "same" sentence). Does your render show the correct alpha when pulled into some other image processing software (i.e. Photoshop, GIMP or the like)?

humm... since the screenshot shows an alpha, i think it's on xsi side.
BUT also, sadly, sometimes you get different result from the render region with mentalray and it's always related to the rgbA slider of your shader tree

Ah Found it. Use Mia Material Shader and at the bottom tick "Propagate Alpha". It will add your transparency to the alpha channel.

True (which is easy to admit, now the OP has found the solution), but the reason I started to look elsewhere (i.e. "Googling" AE), is that I (sort of) know, often transparency issues seem to stem from the way Adobe interprets certain image files (and this is overlooked way too often, blaming it on the "other" software instead, when dealing with such files), requiring additional settings and such.
