Re: Why an Indonesian studio choose Blender over 3ds
I agree with the non-standard navigation to some degree, it throws people off in the first 20 minutes as you say. However, they do have just a quick "Maya" preferences set that switches it to Maya navigation standards. I've spent a few hours with it now and I have to say I quite like it so...

Re: Softimage Explosia FX released!
This looks so fantastic and so long overdue for Softimage. Great work!!! Sadly I'm still on Win. Vista. I tried to install the non-avx version but nothing happens at all. I guess I'm out of luck. Is there any chance there would be a way way around this? Edit: just a silly mistake on my part. Now I g...

Re: Some serious problems with character artists?
Money.
It's very simple. Studios don't want to pay a nickel more than they have to to make the average viewer happy.
When I saw JW I noticed there was such a variation in quality. Some was great and some was really bad.

Re: Perpetual Licensing Changes Buyer's Guide - North America
Hahaha...I can't stop laughing. That has to be the worst propaganda film ever. I love how at the end they say "No matter what your needs are, there's an option for you"...until we take away the one that's right for you and keep the one that's right for us. So what they are saying through t...

Re: Maya 2016 new feature videos
This seems like is a bit of a shot across the bow by AD at MR. Like they're saying, see, we don't really need you anymore, do something worthwhile or we won't include it at all next time. I'm one of the few that liked MR overall so I hope they don't stop including it. Seems like they're finally maki...

Re: Non-commercial Renderman released...
I'm just guessing that Renderman might be trying to re-build some lost market share (if indeed they care about that). I read some interesting articles that talked about all the new in-house rendering systems out there. WETA has their own now (they used to be a big RM user), Dreamworks has their own,...

Re: How long will softimage be Competative...?
I think it depends entirely on what you plan to do. If it's for freelance work or a hobby you intend to enjoy, SI is unbeatable IMO and will be for years. 3D packages are not progressing very quickly anymore. They'll be pretty much the same for the foreseeable future and 3rd party addons add all the...

Re: Houdini14 Sneak Peek
This is really impressive. I hope they manage to take a nice big bite out of Autodesk's market share. Not that AD cares at all but would be nice just the same.
So good to see real progress and exciting development again. I wish I had time to try it right now...I certainly will later.

Re: Blender 2.73 Release Notes
This is very encouraging. By the time SI is outdated Blender will be ready to take it's place if development continues like this.
2015 looks to be a pretty promising year for development in important areas. Great to see.

What makes me laugh is I don't know who's software they're promoting because they don't have anything even remotely similar to that themselves.

Re: Speculars look bad on MentalRay (ArchMat)
The specular on the that shader was always pretty much useless. You can bypass it by using another shader (such as blinn or whatever you want) and plugging it into the architectural shader (global settings / additional color) and turning off everything in the blinn except the specular. This will use...

Thanks for the quick replies! I believe we have it covered now. The drilling company will be reviewing the samples this week and contacting their choice(s). Thanks again and best of luck
