Blast from the past ....
TrueSpace 4 (Caligari was bought by Microsoft and they stop development at TrueSpace 7.6 which was released for free to the community before they closed shop. TrueSpace is still available via download and is maintained by a community of fans and developers to 7.61 beta 8)

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
Of the list Bryce (weird interface, be warned) and Sculptris. Unreal and Unity for game. Sketchup for architecture.
Blender still the way to go for a all around 3D DCC software. Hard to beat, free and modern (in term of development).

If you had 3DeLight, you were very close. Renderman native (not so much outside large studios). Their is the Affogato open source project

Re: Softimage 2015 SP2 and MS Studio
I will try to compile with VS2017 and see if it work. I try to download VS2012 from MS Developer site (I have an account) but I keep getting an error unfortunately. Look like MS has removed the older version. Too bad because both CUDA 10.0 and OptiX 5.1.1 libraries can be compiled with VS2012 from t...

Well I found a response from Microsoft C++ Team on their blog here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/vcblog/2016/02/24/stuck-on-an-older-toolset-version-move-to-visual-studio-2015-without-upgrading-your-toolset/ You can start using Visual Studio 2017 today without having to change your toolset versi...

Softimage 2015 SP2 and MS Visual Studio 2017
Hi everyone, Quick question to confirm. The Softimage 2015 SDK advise to compile C++ plugins for Windows to use the development environment Visual Studio 2012 Update 4. I have Softimage 2015 R2 SP2, can I use MS Studio 2017 instead of 2012 as it is no longer available on the Microsoft website? (I wa...

Nothing I can do about the broken link of ADSK unfortunately.
For 2011 load the SP2 version as the most recent that include all the previous service packs and hotfixes.

You can still found the installer using the search engine (don't use the drop down menu, Softimage is not listed). Search for Softimage 2013 or which ever version you desire (from version 2010 to 2015 sp2). Link to 2013 SP1 below: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/downloads/content/a...

The Softimage 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack was never put out to the general public but only available to subscription owners at that time. All the enhancements made are available with the 2013 version. You will not found the SAP on the Autodesk website.
