Re: Blender 2.80 to arrive in 2018

Played last weekend with Eevee samples for Blender 2.8 - all downloads are at bottom of page. Have to say a big WOOOW. First to describe the Eevee thing, as it is for now, closest could be a Marmoset Toolbag, sort of artist friendly gamedev style renderer. Things like screen space reflection or occl...

Re: Resurrecting Softimage From Scratch

2) Didn't these modo people also write a renderer? I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that they did and that Modo 101 was a modelling/rendering package. That's like writing two products. Actually it was Modo 201 , around 2006, while they wanted to have renderer from beginning, according to li...

Re: Autodesk to lay off a further 13% of its workforce

Around ten years ago it was entire list of available game engines, let's say Cry Engine was just one of them. Only a few of free weren't even close to commercial ones. All that perhaps started as garage projects sometime in 90s. So it looked as logical idea to see game engine created by Softimage or...

Re: Mentalray EOL

By the way just wanted to see what Maya people are saying about this EoL, and.... they have nothing to say. One or zero reply on CG Talk or AD forum. I believed there must be good number of Mayans who just can't live without for any weird reason, but, nothing, like it never even existed. More commen...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Also, as a side note remember how painful it was to really render anything from ICE? My impression was more around 'limited by MR capabilities', somehow typical "can display in viewport, can not render'' for SI. For exact example, ICE was able to do a way more complex hair-strands structures than S...

Re: Mentalray EOL

You're working too hard to defend your false thesis. Softimage was competing against Maya as a character animation tool. Animation seats do not render at all and mental ray or not has nothing to do with competing with Maya There are hundreds of animation seats to one rendering seat. I'm just consid...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Nobody is going to put themselves out there to defend mental ray or any "meh" market leader, they'll just use it quietly. In fact, most people do not post at all. Well they don't use it anymore, or not for long. According to nVidia decision, it seems that your silent majority quietly chose to *do n...

Re: Mentalray EOL

BTW, just by curiosity, after you did kristinka (in XSI 2004 :p ), ... Modo, Maya LT, Houdini, In what do you do 3D nowadays? Perhaps all of those?  Because ALL of those   (or exporting/importing to/from -some- combination of multiple things) is what's typically involved in "replacing" XSI. Some an...

Re: Mentalray EOL

You mean the innovative radiosity solution that was baught (killed) and "integrated" in Max? :p You probably don't know, that 3d studio Max had its rendering API from day one. "Even renderer as plugin" was a part of advertising of 3d studio Max 1. Basically, developers were able to build their rend...

Re: Mentalray EOL

i don't know much about Maya - Afaik, small Maya shops are on V-Ray, mainly, some Red Shift here and there. In past, what helped Maya to be in position where still is today, we all know, it is Renderman connection. While ago, Maya MR liked to display well known message about wrong geometry supplied...

the exact same renderer in 3dsmax and Maya apparently killed softimage. wow. Only in the messagebord alternate reality.
It never ever was *only* renderer in these two, especially it wasn't only available, as you probably know. Could you buy a copy, if we are talking about 'reality'.

Re: Mentalray EOL

Hum.. MR was SI killer? :-j Exactly it was reason for me to finally start leaving SI as tool for making money, around 2010 - also I always felt free to recommend the same to anyone else who can't afford Arnold (wasn't so hard to convince people, by the way). Last time I seriously tried to render so...

Re: Mentalray EOL

And Mental Ray is awesome for NPR based work. Not that much.... yeah MR in Softimage was able to deliver a few features more in toon&ink area, but for huuuuge price, as it used a kind of occlusion, slow as hell. One had to render a small sequence first, adjust parameters and repeat the procedure, j...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Obviously they were not able to sell enough, once AD left them without support. Trials to port it to another apps as standalone, even in 'best' times, like MR for C4d, were commercial disaster, that I know. They lost competition for Solidworks renderer, Modo was winner, around 2008. While others lik...

Re: Fleshout anatomical fx service

Nice. So if final client have complaints, line producer is able to give an answer, something like ''aha, you're asking for Flesh Out - if so, no problem, our prices are....." :). Now seriously, sounds like feasible business model, especially considering the state of Maya muscles, or price of related...
