Re: LuxRender - anyone tried this? V1 released - SI support
I gave it a try when it was at version 0.8. It's an impressive piece of tech... for a free, open source project. It's unbiased, thus slow and kind of noisy, and as far as I remember it was missing a few key features like SSS. It's still a very promising project, particularly with all the work they a...

Re: SI 2013 sightings
@Luceric - Best of luck with your new endeavors! You will be missed, and thank you for the many hard years of dedication that you gave to us and Softimage! I couldn't have said it any better, so I'll just QFA it. And Luc, I don't suppose we can convince you to plant some sort of subliminal message ...

Re: Glossy Reflection and Refraction Shaders for 3Delight
I should mention that this plug-in needed an update to work with 3Delight 3.0.9. Grab it from here:

Such a shame because for a moment there I had a bridge in Brooklyn that I wanted to sell you.Hirazi Blue wrote:It's all relative of course (although my remark was meant to be slightly funny, obviously ).

Re: The most envy tools from other software
What is? The definition of an inside joke is that you won't get it unless you're on the inside. So why bother? :) Install 3delight or buy (like did a friend of mine) Octane (only 99$) Thanks for the advice, but I've already paid for and own both of those. And why bother with what exactly? The whole...

I guess it would depend on what kind of look you're aiming for.
And a lot faster compared to which other method exactly?

Re: Animation, where start?
Wow, 2000 for a course is a big investment. Yes, it's no small change by any means, but I don't think you can find anything cheaper out there. And in exchange for what you pay you get to spend four hours every week with veterans of the industry who will answer your questions and critique your work....

Re: Animation, where start?
It depends on how much time and money you can afford. For me, I decided that I needed peer pressure, so I joined iAnimate.net online animation school. The workload is demanding and the instructors vary in dedication, but the peer pressure and feedback were the best motivator and teacher I had over t...

Re: Why S key?
I have no idea. But if I were to hazard a guess, I would say it's probably because Softimage was basically the only game in town back then. So Alt-Left/Middle/Right mouse navigation was yet to become a standard. You can see the same thing in Ye Olde Lightwave, which goes a long way back and has its ...

Re: 3delight for Softimage 3.0 beta
Added ability to use custom SL file location for render nodes. Unfortunately it seems that this particular feature only works with absolute paths, rendering it next to useless (no pun intended). I was trying to find a workaround using SI2011's shader definition plugins, but somehow I ended up corru...

Re: The most envy tools from other software
So how about we try to kick this thread back into life? And to cut off any attempt to flog some already dead and petrified horses, let's consider the following features off limits: 1. Units of measurement: Discussed to death already. Assume it ain't going to happen. 2. Better Mental Ray Integration,...

Re: Softimage 2012 Experiences
I think it's generally wise to treat new releases of Autodesk products like corporations treat new versions of Windows: use it at home, don't deploy it at work until the first service pack arrives. And if previous releases are any indication, I think a new service pack is probably just around the co...
