Re: Image / video managers, organizers & asset manager review
Time to do a long-term follow-up to my own post. I've been using IMatch5 for a while now and it has not been all rainbows and unicorns. In fact, I'm really disappointed with it. First, the developer of IMatch has a really bad attitude on his forums. He doesn't seem to grasp that everything he does r...

Re: Learning Houdini...
From my very non-technical viewpoint, the way Houdini's nodes work compared to ICE are a big negative. I absolutely love how simple ICE makes it to slap things together. Not just the colors, etc., but how ICE will tell you what a particular input is expecting if you try to connect the wrong type of ...

Re: Learning Houdini...
This is commercial, but if you've never touched Houdini I think it's an excellent introduction: http://www.lynda.com/Houdini-tutorials/Up-Running-Houdini/182377-2.html One thing that concerns me with Houdini is the question of both 3rd party as well as community support & tools. I just finished ...

Re: Softimage to Houdini transition references
I am a big fan of the Chrome extension called Dragdis. I have a folder with some Houdini training I've found. I'm not sure if this'll work or not, but here's the public link to my Houdini Dragdis folder: https://dragd.is/dmahFIsJnbmLZYl8 What's nice with Dragdis is, you're able to mix YouTube, Vimeo...

Re: Learning Houdini...
Wow - glad to find this thread. I'm in exactly the same boat. I noticed during the Digital Tutors free trial that someone had created a video called Cinema 4D for Softimage users. It would be very smart for SideFX to create something similar. I know Jordi has published his PDFs, but I tend to prefer...

Check out Eric Mootz's free tools - the stuff about vertex islands might be useful.

Re: turtle for texturing !
If you want to learn texturing, why start in a full-blown application like Softimage? I would recommend starting with something like Mari or Substance Painter? Substance Painter comes with a couple of free models you can paint and learn with. It's a great package and it's not terribly expensive. -Paul

Re: Blackmagic Fusion 7 is released as PRO and free version
The only negative so far has been how they've handled existing customers. I am on paid maintenance. I heard about the free version via a blog post. I contacted the sales person at Eyeon (now Blackmagic) and was told they had no information for me and I should contact my reseller. I contacted my rese...

Right... which is why I initially said it doesn't have a file browser. Which is a huge negative in my opinion.

Re: Image / video managers, organizers & asset manager review
Sorry to turn the Softimage Community to the Daminion Q&A community. I'll take this offline. But to be clear, this is what I see for the Folder view & is the reason I was under the impression there's no file manager. As you can see by my screen grab, there's no folders & no way to naviga...

I appreciate the reply. I'll give it another try.
I was under the impression both the server and local versions had a file limitation.

Re: Image / video managers, organizers & asset manager review
Thanks for the reply. I can give you my specific run down of issues I see with Daminion. First, the trial has a limit on the number of items you can import. But one of the issues I wanted to test was how well the application handles dealing with 35-40,000 files of different types. Another issue I pe...

Re: Fusion & Nuke
I've used Fusion since the late 1990's, so I'm a bit biased. I think if you want to find compositing jobs, Nuke is the way to go. Nuke is to compositing what Maya is to animation - ugly & difficult, but it's the standard. Fusion is great if you're a small shop or freelancer IMHO. Black Magic too...

Re: Override primary ray visibility on a polygon cluster?
Redshift. I tried rayswitching but the problem I ran into was having to set my refractive ray depth really high, which slowed things down considerably. The solution I ended up using was to extract the polygon clusters, use GATOR to transfer the envelopes to the extracted polys, then delete the origi...

Override primary ray visibility on a polygon cluster?
I know you can add a visibility property to polygon clusters, but is there a way to override primary ray visibility? I need to hide a bunch of polys on some characters, but I still need them to cast shadows. If they were objects, I'd just override their primary ray visibility, but it doesn't look li...

Re: Image / video managers, organizers & asset manager review
True, but many of the others can do that as well. XnViewMP has crashed 3 times today, which is just frustrating. One thing I'm trying to understand is the relationship between WIC and generating thumbnails. I know you need to download some WIC codecs if you want to read RAW files, but one dev said y...
