Re: The road to Maya (yes, Maya)?
At my current job I have to work with Maya 2016 SP4 and what I can clearly say so far is, that I am really happy, that I did NOT take AD's migration offer switching to Maya. As usual, there is a huge gap between marketing hype and reality. Working with Maya is still painful, it's a hell full of bug...

Re: Migration experiences?
And how do you guys are doing about the transition? Hating Maya, liking it, thinking of other possibilities? I myself am going more the C4D way I should say. Animation wise I guess is even worst than 3ds Max, but I like how the system is robust and crash-free (or sort of). Not too bad, scripting is...

Re: Hotkeys and UI and transition stuff (3d migration)
Overly enthusiastic I opened a little blog to mark my own struggle with the move to Maya. Here you can so far find a way to get rid of the dark interface and a rather good workaround for a dual screen setup. Nothing special, just some of the things I found out so far. If I can leave comments on you...

Re: Hotkeys and UI and transition stuff (3d migration)
Been using it for a bit - Im not obsessed with SI shortcuts but you can reassign anything. Learning the code in tandem so any toggle or anything that u like seems easy enough to code and shortcut. first thing I got rid of was hotbox - will set it up later when I know what I want it for. There is a n...

Re: Transition: Max versus Maya
Having looked at Maya for a week... It will do what's needed - but it really stenches of programmers making decisions. The whole icons everywhere looks like an effort to appease 'Arty people' (Like me, but I am a techhie too.) Simple things like the Attribute editor, the use of space, so you have to...

Re: Transition: Max versus Maya
Thanks for all your help and advice everyone, decided on Maya. I am sad to see what was number one bite the dust but hey, gotta move on. It's like everything else in the world, economics rules. Great community here, I wasn't here too much as I was reading the manuals for softimage for 14 years.... uh.

Re: Transition: Max versus Maya
Was looking at this... ~Rappatools for Max https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLmuU-OnSiI This will be my ambition with Max or Maya - Automating all the usual generalist tasks, for example setting up a script to create image planes on select images in a browser. I need to put all that stuff at the fore...

Re: Transition: Max versus Maya
Well this webinar tomorrow might influence our decision on Max/Maya/Other. This is the text from the post mentioned above... re: the future of Maya and Bi-Frost etc. ============================================================================ have already shown the maya roadmap to about 60% of the s...

Re: Transition: Max versus Maya
Perhaps a list of the essential plugins for Max - would be useful then? Here is a thread from another forum - that lists workflow scripts that people consider essential in Max. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=7772669#post7772669 I have been playing for a few days in both packages. Still...

Re: The road to Maya (yes, Maya)?
Ive been looking at Max and Maya, no clearer on making a decision. If I was working on a film with a team or working with a team I think Maya. I am a single operator-generalist, took years with Softimage, to sort of tame it to do exactly what I need - which is fantastic. I can see the limits in Max ...

Re: Fighting the depression
Well I'm actually excited to learn new software from using Softimage. . . even if somthing is missing - what I've learned in Soft is 'Find another way to do it' if it ain't working out. It is an oppertunity to start learning something in the best way possible - knowing how much experience you have. ...

Hotkeys and UI and transition stuff (3d migration)
Hi there, I wonder would a thread be useful for this.
Would people post any links to videos, keyboard shorcut files/ UI Layout etc that might ease transition ?
I know Soft has a Maya compatible keymap - so moving the other way...

Re: pass manager
it's the most basic way you would think of creating a pass/partition system - Your scene on the left, select and filter anything, switch to materials, whatever, then another explorer docked with passes on the right. Drag and drop anything you want anywhere. Apply overrides, done. I make all passes w...

Re: The road to Maya (yes, Maya)?
True, I suppose I can pop over and back to Soft. - I did make a mistake at the start of my career, took advice and started using Softimage 3d (The first version) as opposed to Max, keep in mind it was for one day turn around jobs in TV etc. Knew it was a mistake after a few months, but it was ok. I ...

Re: pass manager
Looking at Max and Maya videos (Still undecided - but think it would be good to get started) - The Maya workflow seems similar to Softimage (very similar components Attribute editor = property editor etc.), much more similar than Max. Max looks a little 'We thought of this later'. I have been workin...
