Re: Fighting the depression
I'm mad. Still at a loss for words, for most of us at work using Softimage it's hard to even model. We have been moving to another program but our cycle for that was suppose to be for a year. Now it has sped up. After years of Softimage using something different seems unnatural but life must go on.

Re: Going Modo?
LWCAD is good, it fills a hole that has been missing in the Lightwave modeler. A lot of options with LWCAD, doors, windows, railings, fences and additional modeling tools.kat wrote:Have you guys seen LWCAD?
XSI tools felt natural and right now for me it's very hard to replace.

Re: What if Softimage died?
Out of curiosity what would be LightWaves modeler problem? As long as you LWCad and can use a modeler that has no manipulators, working in Modeller is fine. A bit different approach to tumbling in the viewport but that is customizable. We used Lightwave for a long time at my work but mostly use Sof...

Re: VrayRT for Softimage
We had a copy of VRay for Softimage for two of our computers. We recently just stopped using it because of the inconsistent render times, not the greatest support and very buggy as well. We actually just switched to Guerrilla Render this week but still using Mental Ray for most of the work.

Digital Tutors has a nice video about nDo and dDo: http://www.digitaltutors.com/11/training.php?pid=1464
Good luck with fbx.

Re: Export Tangents and Binormals from Softimage to NDO2
This has been an ongoing issue with fbx and nDo2. It's not just Autodesk, Modo, Lightwave and Blender are having the same problem. It stems from the fbx being exported without the "Calculate Tangent and Bitangent Data". Also make sure your mesh is triangulated before it is exported. Forum ...

Re: V-Ray for Softimage: Tutorials and Walkthrough
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with normal mapping. It just doesn't seem to work like in MR by plugging the xsinormalMap Connect the Normal Map Image node to the Bump input on the VRay Material. Go into VRay Material and select the maps Tab, then select the Bumps drop down and change it...

Re: Advice on stylized modelling / texturing
Hmm, what comes to mind is changing the outfit and hair color. Play around with the hair a bit. Make it a bit lighter, closer to a brownish-blonde. The shoes are very dark. Change the color of the shoes, pants and shirt a bit. Make two or three outfits and then have the characters stand next to each...

Re: What if Softimage died?
Just on a side note ... Autodesk has hosted the videos for the Expert Challenge series on the Area. Funny thing, this month, no Softimage Expert Challenge. I've watched the 3ds Max one and the new PM, which seems like a great guy, stayed all the time reassuring users that the future is bright, that...

Re: What if Softimage died?
Newtek is a privately owned company and AFAIK Lightwave still is their "flagship" software product. They are an independent company but i think only until very recently Lightwave has become Newteks Flagship product. They make the tricaster which is used for television production which Lig...

Re: What if Softimage died?
I don't think Softimage will die out, at least not at my place of work. We use Softimage as our main package for games and animations. I work as a 3D Generalist for the DOD. We use Maya and Lightwave (better curve tools in Lightwave) to model some objects here and there but that is only during rende...

Re: Advice on stylized modelling / texturing
I love where this image is going, good job so far. The modeling is good but the character is not too focused. The background sticks out more than the character. Not sure the plan on the color scheme but just noticing that. I use http://colorschemedesigner.com/ this at work to get me started on some ...

Re: Advice on stylized modelling / texturing
Looks good, maybe a lamp on the nightstand, maybe not. The scene looks good without it right now. Sometimes less is more for cartoon/stylized type scenes. I have a mock up of the door I was thinking about. The outside door frame corners have a slight bevel to it. You can raise the corner a bit to br...

Re: Advice on stylized modelling / texturing
Doors are a funny thing in a stylized universe. A door that is too rounded looks like it belongs in the Dr Seuss universe. Sometimes just rounding the door frame around the outer corners gives it a softer stylized look. Good Luck!
