"I'd not use Maya for characters"

Well in that case I think you will be pleasantly suprised by Houdini rigging. It's not on the level of Softimage but it's getting there. At the rate SideFX are going hopefully it will be just a few years and a couple of versions until they have what we need.

Re: Finally used Maya and here are my initial thoughts.

VOPS are very similar to ICE. They even flow left to right unlike the rest of Houdini. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there other than the help files but a lot of your ICE skills will transfer nicely. It takes a bit of trial and error to work out what equivalent things are, it jus...

Re: Houdini 16

Well I would say that presentation was a pretty clear demonstration of the way Houdini is going and the kind of people SideFX are. They didn't say it outright but they have people like us Softies and others in their sights. They actually listened to what people need and they have generated a lot of...

Now they just need to get the Cloth sorted. :) I may be faster to deliver your wish, when I will start implementing Phy.. later this month, but :-$ about it for now :- Cool :D I'll keep an eye out for it. Good to see the Think Procedural Discord forum doing so well. It's really become a lively ...

Re: Biosuit WIP

A few small tricks to share... Transparency in viewport: for getting that old school alpha like helmet in first pic, still not doing anything with materials, it seems to be enough to create attribute called Alpha and set something between 0 and 1, somewhere in SOP network. Convert VDB to polygons, ...

Re: Houdini training courses?

Are there any tutorials specifically geared towards understanding vops/vex from the perspective of Softimage ICE users? I'm afraid not. I haven't come across any. It requires a lot of trial and error. A good place to start learning VEX is here: https://vimeo.com/67677051 It's a little old but this ...

Re: Houdini training courses?

That's the spirit everyone :ymhug:

Just remember Houdini is not a direct replacement for Softimage. In many ways it is nothing like it and never will be. Just leave your Softimage baggage at the door and approach it like you are learning CG for the first time.

Re: Houdini training courses?

I'm very much looking forward to Houdini 16, after all the teaser videos. I really hope they cleaned up some of the more convoluted workflows and made it (again) a bit more user friendly for the 'regular' artist. This is exactly what H16 is all about. They have made the UI more user friendly. It's ...

Also

As a beginner make sure you do not do any tutorials over 2 years old. Tutorials for versions lower than 15.0 can be confusing.

There's nothing more affordable than free.
